SEBASTIEN 
MARI

 

Sébastien Mari began his dance education in the Conservatory of his hometown La Rochelle (France) with Colette Milner, Marie Paule Cantenys, Karin Wahener and Bertrand Papillon. After graduating with the Gold Medal of the Conservatories of France, he started his career in 1989 with the Jeune Ballet de France 7 and 8 (France) under the direction of Robert Berthier before joining Nederlands Dans Theater (The Netherlands), with Jiri Kylian. After 6 years with NDT he joined the Compania Nacional de Danza (Spain) with Nacho Duato, where he remained for 4 years. He then joined Ballet Gulbenkian (Portugal) directed by Iracity Cardoso and Paulo Ribeiro for 3 years.

During this time he danced numerous works from choreographers such as Nacho Duato, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, Jiri Kylian, Ohad Naharin, Hans Van Manen , and also ,Mauro Bigonzetti, Claude Brumachon, Stijn Celis, Marie Chouinard, Patrick Delcroix, Nicolo Fonte, Itzik Galilli, Jacques Garnier, Cesc Gelabert, Patrick Happy de Bana, Hervé Jourdet, Nadine Hernu, Rui Horta, Amanda Miller, Martino Müller,Gideon Obarzanek, Angelin Preljocaj, Paulo Ribeiro, Enrique Rodovalho, Yvonice Satie, Paul Selwyn-Norton, Patricia Tuerling and Didy Veldman. Then, he spent the following 5 years both dancing in or assisting various free-lance projects with Peter Agardi, Particai Alzetta, Kader Belarbi, Caroline Bo, Guillaume Bordier, Carolina Constantinou, Jeanette Damant, Pieter De Ruiter, Laurence Fanon, Julien Ficely, Jennifer Hanna, Nanine Linning, Sabine Linz, Nicolas Musin, Sebastian Edward Nichita, Guliano Peparini, Redha, Richard Siegal, Saburo Teshigawara, Pascal Touzeau, Nathalie Tournaire and Regina Van Berkel. From 2009 until July 2014, Sébastien has been a part of ballettmainz (Germany) under the direction of Pascal Touzeau, first as a dancer in several choreographies by Pascal Touzeau, William Forsythe, and since 2011, as a coordinator, ballet master and rehearsal director for Davy Brun, Johan Inger, Jiri Kylian, Douglas Lee, Ohad Naharin, Georg Reischl, Pascal Touzeau, Didy Veldman.

Since 2014 Sébastien Mari is an international ballet master/assistant,he has been invited to teach his ballet classes to the Ballet de Genève (Switzerland), in Germany to Ballett Koblenz, Ballet Saarbrucken, Theater Regensburg Tanz, Theater Nordhausen, Nationaltheater Mannheim, Tanztheater Münster ,to assist Bridget Breiner in Ballett im Revier , Tarek Assam in Tanztheater Giessen and Pascal Touzeau for Oedipus, in the Netherlands to the Introdans, Henny Jurriens Stichting, Korzo Theater. He assisted and performed with Justin Peck in Paris and gave his workshops and ballet classes to Dance Faculty of Art, Accademia Nazionale di Roma (Italy), to Conservatoire National de Danse de La Rochelle (France), to Instituto del Teatro ,Centre de Dansa de Catalunya de Roser Muñoz y Joan Boix, to la Companyia, to Obrador de Moviments, IBstage and Thomas Noone Dance (Spain). He restaged different works such as 7’8 from Georg Reischl for IT, “A sweet Spell of Oblivion” from David Dawson, Daybreak from Pontus Lidberg for Ballet Im Revier, “In Honor of” from Bridget Breiner for Les Grands Ballets Canadiens

He is the assistant of choreographer Jeroen Verbruggen for his new creations Open Space with Ballett Im Revier, Dance Hall with Ballet Moscow and Sleeping Beauty with Leipziger Ballett. Sébastien Mari speaks fluent French, Spanish, English and Portuguese, has some knowledge of Dutch and German, has a diploma in Interior Design. Apart from being involved, and passionate about the dance world, he is also interested in aerial acrobatics, street art, architecture, sculpture and psychology.
